Youth Program - Class Descriptions

The classes below are our current offerings.


Skate Board Design

Day offered: Monday

In this class students will work to transform a raw skateboard into a work of art. Students will work in any way they can think to get their idea on to their board. Options include drawing, painting, Photoshop, stencils, spray-paint, wheat pasting, and screen-printing. With all of these tools the classroom will be an artistic free for all.

Package Design

This is an opportunity to work to customize a popular toy called a Munny . With this toy the possibilities are endless. Using basic Photoshop skills combined with drawing, painting and sculpture students and teacher will work together to customize the Munny and the box it comes in. The end result is a personal toy that you have designed from head to toe.

Black & White Photography

Explore the opportunity to share your creativity and community with a pen pal in another city. Using pinhole and film cameras we will explore the city while learning the basics about black and white photography. A rad mix of assignments will encourage you to see the city in which we live in new ways and then share that vision with others.


Techniques with Acrylics (Advanced Painting & Drawing)

This is an opportunity to express yourself with a wet medium. Class will explore how to mix and apply this challenging medium to board, paper and canvas with your choice of subject matter.


Wear it or Hang it (3D Costume/Fiber Sculpture – Advanced Fiber Arts)

Lean how to draw out and develop an idea into a 3D costume or sculpture. Students have the opportunity to select fiber to work with, or create your own by manipulating existing fibers. Open your mind and express yourself to the fullest!


Digital Photography

In this class learn to use a digital SLR camera just like a professional photographer. Ever wonder how to take photographs just like the fashion magazines? With this class you can learn all the Adobe Photoshop tricks just like any professional photographer. You will also learn to do special lighting techniques in a real live studio setting. So if you want to learn all these fun techniques this class is for you!


Intro to Painting & Drawing

Explore how to integrate mind, body, and spirit to create masterful illustrations of family members, stars, or icons. You will use mainly pastels.


Your Photos Published

Day offered: Monday
Instructor: Mr. Dennis

Would you like to see your photos in print? Using the high quality WMCAT digital cameras, each student will have their own book printed with pictures around a photojournalistic theme of their choice. In addition, we will print note cards for each student in class, just in time for the Christmas holiday. Finally, your images made in this class could be selected for inclusion in a WMCAT calendar for 2013. Get published and build your high school portfolio along the way with a photo class at WMCAT this fall!

Portfolio Development

Showcase your most brilliant photographs, paintings, drawings and designs in one beautiful collection making your personal portfolio! Your portfolio will be a collection of your best work created at WMCAT or on your own. Portfolio design will help you take your best work and make it shine even brighter!

T-Shirt screenprinting, poster-making, a personal logo, and almost anything else you can imagine. In this class, we’ll be experimenting with various forms of printmaking, and ways to integrate it with digital art. We’ll be scanning and photographing prints and adding digital text to communicate our messages. So what do you have to say?

Mixed Media Portrait Painting Madness

Day offered: Wednesday
Instructor: Mr. George

Have you ever made anything that truly says something about yourself? Have you thought about a way you could? Then this class is for you! This class is for everyone! We all are born with a voice and this class lets you express that voice to the world through art. With a combination of several art styles including watercolor painting, pen & ink drawing, collage and a few others. Learn to express your messages to your viewer. To finish students will learn the basic of visual and verbal presentation to hang work in WMCAT Art show.

The 3 R’S: Recycle • Reuse • Rewear

Day offered: Monday
Instructor: Mr. John

This class is all about making clothing out of found objects and deconstructing old clothing into new fashion! This is a great way to learn how to sew clothing. The final project will include a fashion show and photo shoot.

The Big Camera KA-BLAM!

Day offered: Wednesday
Instructor: Mr. Dennis

It is astounding how many kinds of cameras have been used to take pictures over time – big ones, small ones, tiny ones and huge ones. Cameras that are so simple even a child could make one, to extremely high quality,
complicated ones that most people never see. Use film cameras of all kinds, and maybe even more digital ones. In this class, we will play with them all! From camera phones to pinhole cameras, professional digital models to large-format view cameras. If you have an interest in the many ways to make photos, this class is for you!

3-D Sculpture

Day offered: Monday
Instructor: Mr. George

Like working with your hands? Like getting dirty? But not too dirty? Then this class is for you! This sculpting class presents the opportunity to work with plaster. Learn the importance of abstract sculpting as well as representative sculpting, and become skilled with several sculpting tools including the most important one of all, your brain.

Needles, Pins & Scissors…(Intro to Fiber Arts)

Learn the basic principals of sewing & dying. First, learn how to sew an apron, and then learn to resist dye! You will make a bag and a pair of lounge pants with the fabrics you dye!


Advanced Toy Making

In advanced toy-making students get the feel of working in a character-sculpting studio. In this class you get to free yourself from the computer and work from the ground up to create your very own toy. This class offers advanced drawing training and character development exercises.
