Cindy is a licensed pharmacy technician with more than seven years experience in both hospital and retail settings. In addition to teaching at WMCAT, she currently works as medication history technician at Spectrum Health. She worked as a pharmacy technician at both Walgreens and Meijer, after graduating from Careerline Tech Center in 2008.


Susan Slajus

Medical Coding and Healthcare Services

Susan has a long career in healthcare education, serving as department chair for Health Information Management at Davenport University, an adjunct professor, and a subject matter expert and consultant for health information management curriculum. She also served as the manager of outpatient coding for St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit.

Susan earned her Master of Business Administration from Davenport University and her Bachelor of Science from Aquinas College. She is a registered Health Information Technician, and an America Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) approved trainer in ICD-10, the new standard coding language.

Professionally and in the community Susan served on WMCAT’s Advisory Board for medical coding, a member of AHIMA, the Michigan Health Information Management Association, and the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony.


Andrea Owens

Medical Billing

Andrea joined WMCAT as our medical billing instructor in 2014 with a wealth of experience in health care support services, education and administration. She was an instructor in the medical assistant program at Everest Institute, working with students on skill-based training and career development. Andrea also served as the coordinator of the SMART Program – Occupational Health at Spectrum Health for more than 10 years, through which she improved processes, implemented a quality improvement program, and worked within the regulatory system. She was also a billing specialist at Metro Health. Andrea earned her Master of Science and Bachelor of Science from Cornerstone University.



Jovonnah Lee Nicholson

Intro to Ceramics and Advanced Ceramics

Jo shares her talent and passion for arts education as our teaching artist for ceramics and sculpture. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture and Functional Arts from Kendall College of Art and Design, where she also taught several courses in ceramics. A working artist who has exhibited statewide, Jo taught at the Urban Institute of Contemporary Arts and Ox-Bow Summer School of Art; and sold work on consignment through galleries. Throughout her career she has received several awards including a Studio Excellence Award from Kendall and honors from Festival of the Arts in Grand Rapids. You can even find her creative touch as an ice sculptor at local events and on “Ice Brigade,” a 2011 Food Network show.


Mike Saunders

Video Production and Audio Storytelling

WMCAT Teaching Artist Mike Saunders is passionate about video and audio production. He is a producer on three award-winning films with Sob Noisse – “Coyote,” “Ape” and “Buzzard,” which premiered at the 2014 South By Southwest Film Festival and was featured at the New Directors/New Films festival in New York City. A lover of music, particularly those tunes he can find on vinyl, he is a co-founder of The Grand Rapids Soul Club and a popular DJ. Mike is also co-founder of Plastic Son Productions, through which he has worked with nonprofits to produce documentaries. He has a Bachelor of Arts from Grand Valley State University and completed the Lexia program at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic.


George Eberhardt

George Eberhardt teaches drawing, painting, illustration and other design classes at WMCAT, where he has worked since 2006. George has worked with young people at UICA’s Artworks, the Cook Arts Center and City of Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation. As a professional artist George is a founding member of GR8, an art collective, a founder of Rouge Syndicate studio and gallery, and a member of Sleeping Giant Inc. He has exhibited throughout Michigan including ArtPrize and the Detroit Art Battle.


Dennis Grantz

Intro to Photography and Advanced Photography

Before coming to WMCAT to start the photo program in 2005, Dennis spent many years as a photo instructor at the college level, both at Grand Rapids Community College and Kendall College of Art and Design.  He has a Bachelors degree in painting and drawing from CMU and a Masters degree in photography.  As a working artist, Dennis has won many awards for his hand-colored photographs and digital images, and his work is found in public and private collections across the U.S. and abroad. Many of his students have gone on to professional careers in the arts, and he was named “Teacher of the Year” in 1996 at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival.  He has a passion for photography, but running, reading, and laughing are also some of his favorite things to do.


John Cox

Fashion Design

John Cox specializes in color, design and textiles. He has taught fiber arts at WMCAT since 2008. John earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design from Kendall College of Art and Design with additional studies in textiles, industiral design and art history. He owned an arts retail business in Grand Rapids for 12 years and worked as an artist in Japan. John has displayed his work at galleries throughout west Michigan. Currently he is working on a collaborative project with artists in Canada.


Jessica Plowman

Game Programming and Video Game Design

Jessica Plowman is a game designer, author, and educator. Along with her work at WMCAT, she teaches Unreal Engine game development as part of the Digital Animation and Game Design program at Ferris State University. Jessica has worked with Unreal Technology in the education arena for more than 10 years and is the author of 3d Game Design with Unreal Engine 4 and Blender available from Packt publishing.
